Gardening and growing our own (aka the good life!)

We have a lovely garden at Colby Road and our children enjoy planting seeds, watering them and watching them grow.

This Summer 2019, the children have taken great pride in picking the potatoes, strawberries, onions, radishes that they have grown in our nursery garden and of course these are taken home to be enjoyed with Mums and Dads!

The children just love exploring the garden and we often take time to enjoy looking at ladybirds, worms, birds, bees and butterflies  that are regular visitors to our garden.  We are so lucky to be in London and to have a big garden, it really means our children can enjoy the outdoor life!

And this year, in July 2019, we are very pleased to say we've now got a gorgeous outdoor playhouse in the garden.  A lovely spot of shade on a sunny day or place to go and read or have some rest time.

Music

At Colby Road, we think music is a huge part of learning and development for children.  At least twice each week the children have the opportunity to choose from a wide range of musical instrucments, have a go and have some fun.  Singing and dancing is positively encouraged.

Weekly Outing (to library or park)

Our children love to have a walk up to Crystal Palace Library where they get a chance to explore the books and sometiems we're lucky enough to catch the puppet show.

In the alternative we go to the park!  Swings and slides galore it's always great fun, a chance for fresh air, exerciese , exploring nature and lots of giggles!

Monthly Teddy Bear's Picninc

This is a recent addition to our monthly events and it's proven to be a great success.  Each of our children brings in a teddy or similar of their choice from home and the children get the chance themselves to set up the picnic - outdoors (weather permitting) - and great care from our chidren goes into setting up the blanket, cups and saucers and teapot - a lovely introduction to independence through picnicking!

Monthy Book Day

We encourage all our children to bring in a favourite book from home and this will be read out at storytime to all the children.  The delight on sharing a favourtie book with your friends something very special indeed!

Junk Modelling

At Colby Road we all support recycling, reusing and recreating.  Our parents kindly collect all sorts of disused items, shoe boxes, loo rolls etc and we put our imaginations to good use to help the children recreat something new and exciting to be proud of and take home.

Drama Class

We have a tradition of drama classes each week at Colby Road Nursery.  We have seen year on year that the children absolutely love this activity class and it's a great opportunity for them to be creative, dance and learn about new themes.  All parents are more than welcome to come along to see a class and join in with the fun if they would like to!

Some recent themes have been Indian costume and music which gave the children the opportunity to hear and play Indian instruments and to try out traditional Indian clothes. Brook always tries to complement the nursery theme as per our curriculm and this currently involves learning about 'people who help us' including doctors, nurses, firemen, postmen and police and all the sights, sounds and costumes that go along with the theme.

Wednesday cooking!

Every Wednesday morning, the children have the opportunity to do some cooking.  Our staff assist the children in getting involved and cooking up a storm!  The children have enjoyed making biscuits, bread and oat cakes.

The children love learning about the different smells, colours and textures involved in cooking and taking turns to mix and stir to help make something yummy.

We think this is great opportunity for children to get a feel for the joy of cooking and learn more about food.

Face Painting

Once each month, with parents permission, the children enjoy a spot of face painting and enjoy surprising their parents when they are collected as they have been transformed into little tigers, butterflies or similar!
